Femmes, that is to say feminine-of-center LGBTQ folks, are also made of power, determination and now, with the swearing-in of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), senatorial gravitas.

Literally not a thing of political substance in the entire piece. Which, for an Op-Ed, is not in and of itself a damning condemnation.

Sinema’s swearing-in look can best be described as high femme: a hyperfeminine appearance with all the trappings, like nails, hair and high heels.

Why does it matter? Because representation matters. Visibility matters. Setting an example and breaking barriers matter. Sinema is sending a message: Women in power can stop denaturing themselves in order to be taken seriously ― or to assume even more power.

According to the author, Sinema’s choice of attire (and I must admit, her outfit was very nice) is a coded message about the usurpation of political power for “femme” queers.

The author would be remiss without mentioning the buzzphrase of “weaponized femininity” which readers are treated to near the conclusion.

But the naysayers were outnumbered by fans and stans, who remarked on the outfit with a mix of admiration and wry humor. Culture writer Constance Grady praised Sinema’s outfit as “weaponized femininity,” which is about the most economical definition of femme I’ve ever heard.

The language surrounding contemporary politics is completely muddled with fandom jargon and cult of personality. Politicians cannot simply be representatives, they must be celebrities.

For the record, Senator Sinema has voted in favor of the following:

• DoD appropriations and NDAA 2019
  
• BITMAP, which is a biometric registry for tracking migrants, immigrants, and to ostensibly “protect” our National Security
• Granting the Federal Reserve exclusive authority to amend rules over the enforcement of the Volcker rule, which is meant to reign in banks’ ability to make speculative investments
